Mike Company cadet dies in car accident

          Cadet Gregory F. Pope, a sophomore in Mike Company, was killed Sunday, Nov. 23 while enroute to his home in Pikeville, N.C. for Thanksgiving break.

           According to North Carolina newspaper accounts,
Pope, 19, apparently fell asleep while driving on Interstate 95 in Robeson, N.C., around 6:30 a.m.

          Pope came to The Citadel in August 2002. He was a business administration major and Army ROTC student. He also was a member of the South Carolina National Guard.

          He is survived by his mother and father, Suzanne Fields Pope and Gregory Mayron Pope; a sister, Mary Carmen Pope of Wilmington; his maternal grandparents, William B. Fields and Rachel P. Fields of Pikeville; and his paternal grandparents, Mayron Pope and Ruby Pope of Goldsboro.

          Funeral services will be at Nahunta Friends Church at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26 at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro, N.C. Pallbearers will be Randall Fields, Ryan Fields, Dave Walston, Parker King, Trey Benton, Brad Peele, and Darwin Byrd.

          Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Nahunta Friends Church Building Fund, 2537 NC. Hwy. 581 North, Pikeville, N.C., 27863.

          A campus memorial service is being planned for after the Corps of Cadets returns from Thanksgiving break.
