For Release A profile of the Class of 2006 Between 600 and 620 freshmen are expected to arrive at The Citadel on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002. The college received a record 2,057 applications for The Class of 2006, the largest number of applications in the college's history. Last year's entering class of 694 freshman was the largest class in 20 years. This year, freshmen are expected to make up one third of the estimated 1,900- member South Carolina Corps of Cadets. The Class of 2006 is a diverse group:
The Class of 2006 also includes about 100 athletes who reported Aug. 5 and have completed military training. Among them are 49 football players, 14 womens soccer players, nine mens soccer players, six volleyball players, six mens cross country athletes, six managers, five womens cross country athletes, four trainers and two cheerleaders. Academic orientation for the Class of 2006 takes place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18, 2002. Military training starts Monday, Aug. 19, 2002. At 6 p.m. Monday, the freshmen will will be sworn in as members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets on Summerall Field. Upperclassmen return Aug. 25 and classes begin Aug. 28. -end-
