1998 grad dies in Navy helicopter crash in Sicily
Lt. Peter Ober, a member of the Class of 1998 and a Navy helicopter pilot, was one of four crewmen who died when their Sea Dragon helicopter went down on July 16th in eastern Sicily. The crash occurred within ten miles of the Navy base at Sigonella where Ober and his family lived. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, he is survived by his wife, Alicia and their four-year-old daughter.
Ober majored in health, exercise and sports science. A member of Charlie Company, he was a varsity wrestler who was known for his tenacity and spirit. Although he rarely won matches, he was never pinned -- a fact that helped the team and saved many matches according to Associate Athletic Director Ed Steers.
Every year his wrestling coach recognized Ober by giving him the coach's award for tenacity and dedication. When he was a senior, the coach renamed the award in his honor.
A memorial service is tentatively planned for Tuesday, July 22 in Sicily. Plans for a service in his hometown of Jacksonville are pending.
