The Citadels graduation rates are tops for athletes

Winning games is indeed important but what is more impressive are the wins in the classroom, and The Citadels graduation rates are the best among all public Division I colleges in the Palmetto State.

According to NCAA statistics, The Citadels 67 percent graduation rate for all student-athletes is the best. The colleges graduation rate of 70 percent for all students is also tops in the state. And to boot, the Bulldogs football teams graduation rate of 76 percent is the best in the Southern Conference.

There is always room for improvement, but we like to lead the pack, said Associate Athletics Director Ed Steers. When one takes into consideration that the national average for all students is 58 percent and for all student-athletes is 60 percent, we like what we see.

To me, the most revealing statistic the NCAA publishes is the graduation rate for student-athletes who use all four years of eligibility, Steers continued. Over a 10-year period, The Citadels rate has ranged between 93 and 96 percent. This means that an athlete that stays with our system has a strong prospect of earning his or her degree. But we know we could be doing better and we will continue to work to reach our goal of 100 percent.

Following The Citadels 67 percent graduation rate for all student-athletes is Winthrop, which does not field a football team, at 59 percent. In descending order, South Carolina is third and is followed by South Carolina State, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina and Clemson.

Following The Citadels 70 percent graduation rate for all students is Clemson at 69 percent and then South Carolina, College of Charleston, Winthrop, South Carolina State and Coastal Carolina.

And on the gridiron, the Bulldogs 76 percent is followed by Wofford, VMI, Western Carolina, Furman, Georgia Southern, Chattanooga, Appalachian State and East Tennessee State.
