The Citadels Team Captains Lead By Example

Student-athletes are among the academic standouts at The Citadel this year.

Five team captains earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages during the first half of the academic year. At press time spring grades had not been finalized.

"Were pleased with the achievements made by our cadet-student-athletes in the classroom," said Citadel Director of Athletics Les Robinson. "They are making the grades on the playing fields and on courts, and it is evident that great progress is being made with their academics as well."

Individual leaders were basketballs Travis Cantrell, who earned a 4.0 in Business Administration and cross-countrys Sharon Hackers 4.0 in biology.

A total of eight student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 averages, 22 made Gold Stars, 68 made Deans List, and 157 earned Athletic Directors Honor Roll accolades. The top team overall was womens cross-country with a sterling 3.34 GPA.

Basketball had eight players earning over a 3.0 GPA. Five of the top six tennis players earned over a 3.0 average, including two 4.0s (John Dougherty and David Scates).

Volleyball had 10 of 11student-athletes record over 3.0 averages. Womens cross-country had eight of nine athletes over a 3.0 average. These teams may qualify for national awards by the end of the year.
