Citadel bagpipers commemorate
one-month anniversary of attacks

The Citadel Bagpipers commemorated the one-month anniversary of the World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist attacks on Thursday, October 11, 2001.

The bagpipers, who number between 14 and 18 at each Friday afternoon parade, performed "Amazing Grace" at noon in front of the Summerall Field flagpole as the South Carolina Corps of Cadets marched to the mess hall for lunch.

The performance was one of a few hundred that took place around the world Thursday "as a gesture of support," according to the Alliance of North American Pipe Band Associations.

"Over the centuries, the music of the bagpipes has been called upon to swell the heart and lead meditation and prayer in times of trouble and need," said alliance chairman Jeffrey Mann. "We encourage pipers and drummers, wherever they may be to play as a gesture of support for the victims of these terrible acts and their families, and as a show of support against the evil of terrorism."

The Citadel bagpipers play each Tuesday and Thursday as the Corps of Cadets marches to lunch.
