Altman Athletic Center opens Friday

The Citadel Brigadier Foundation will dedicate the Altman Athletic Center on Friday, October 12, 2001.

Built with the help of a $1 million donation from the William M. Altman Jr. family, the athletic center houses hospitality rooms and locker facilities for Citadel athletics. The building is in the north end zone of Johnson Hagood Stadium.

The Altman Center is part of long-range plans to rebuild Johnson Hagood Stadium and create and athletic complex. The Holliday Alumni Center across from the football field was the first building completed. It opened in 2000.

A native of South Carolina and a 1931 Citadel graduate, the late William M. Altman Jr. was also an Army and World War II veteran, having served from 1942 to 1946. He owned and operated Altman Motors, Inc. in Orangeburg and in later years was associated with the Division of General Services for the State of South Carolina.

Altman is the recipient of an honorary doctorate of laws from The Citadel in 1991 and the Order of the Palmetto. He was a long-time member of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, serving as its president in 1996, and was active in the Citadel Alumni Association.

More than 100 people are expected to attend the invitation-only dedication ceremony Friday along with members of the Altman family and Citadel administrators and supporters.

Also, Friday's parade will be in honor of Altman and members of his family expected to attend. Parade begins at 3:45 p.m. on Summerall Field. It is free and open to the public.
