Top six ranking cadets announced for 2002-2003

          The top six ranking cadets for the 2002-2003 academic year were recently announced at The Citadel. All are Dean's List students and include the first female battalion commander and four military contract students.

          These student military officers will lead the approximately 1,800 members of the S.C. Corps of Cadets this coming fall. They were chosen after extensive interviews and evaluation.

          All rising seniors, the cadets hail from Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

Cadet Richard P. Neikirk

         Cadet Richard P. Neikirk of New Wilmington, Pa., earned the rank of Regimental Commander, the highest-ranking cadet position on campus. Cadet Neikirk, a civil engineering major, is a Marine Corps contract student and on the Dean's List. He is a member of Band Company and was previously an Armorer Clerk, Squad Corporal and Company First Sergeant. Upon graduation in 2003, Neikirk will enter the Marine Corps.

Cadet Mervin "Ashley" Garry

          Cadet Mervin "Ashley" Garry of Clover, S.C., will be the Regimental Executive Officer, the second in command. Cadet Garry is a political science major. He is on the Dean's List, Commandant's List and President's List for outstanding academic work and a member of Palmetto Battery. He previously served as a Company Clerk, Regimental Operations Clerk, Athletic Cadre Platoon Sergeant and Regimental Sergeant Major. After graduation, Garry plans to enter the U.S. Army.

          Also named were four battalion commanders, each in charge of one of The Citadels four barracks. Each battalion is composed of four to five companies with a total of 450 to 500 cadets in each battalion.

Cadet Amanda M. Orson

          Cadet Amanda M. Orson will serve as the First Battalion Commander for the upcoming academic year. Orson is from Towaco, N.J. and an English major. While at The Citadel, she has been on the Dean's List and Commandant's List and has served as a Sports Cadre Clerk, Regimental Staff Administrative Clerk, Sports Cadre First Sergeant and Battalion Sergeant Major.

          A Navy contract student, Orson is also a member of the cross-country and indoor and outdoor track teams. She will enter the Navy after graduation in May 2003.

Cadet Justin C. Tobias

          Cadet Justin C. Tobias will command Second Battalion. A civil and environmental engineering major, Tobias hails from Virginia Beach, Va.          Tobias has been on the Dean's List, Commandant's List and President's List and has received Gold Stars for outstanding academic performance. He has served as a Squad Corporal, Battalion Clerk and Battalion Sergeant Major.

Cadet Damasio Davila

          Cadet Damasio Davila, an Army contract student, will lead Third Battalion. He is a political science major from San Antonio, Texas, who has been on the President's List, Dean's List and Commandant's List. His previous positions have included Company Clerk, Battalion Clerk and Battalion Master Sergeant.

Cadet Adam W. Burch

          Cadet Adam W. Burch of Saratoga, N.Y., will serve as the Fourth Battalion Commander. A political science major, Burch has received Gold Stars, Dean's List and Commandant's List recognition during his time at The Citadel.

          Burch is a Marine Corps contract student who has previously served as a Squad Corporal, Battalion Clerk and Battalion Sergeant Major.
