U.S. News ranks
The Citadel
a top Southern institution
Engineering ranks #21 nationwide
The 2001 rankings of America's best colleges by U.S. News
and World Report gave The Citadel high marks in comparison
with its peer institutions in the South, and singled out the engineering
program for national ranking. In the rankings released on September
1st, The Citadel ranked Number 3 in the category of Best public
southern universities.
Other categories where The Citadel placed include:
- Best southern universities (public and private) - Number 7
- Best undergraduate engineering program at a school with only
bachelors and masters degrees -- Number 21
- Most students living on campus -- In the top group with 100
percent.
The college was grouped in the category of 505 regional universities
that offer comprehenisve undergraduate programs and some master's
degrees but no doctoral programs. That category was further subdivided
into four geographic regions.
The U.S. News and World Report survey uses data collected
from colleges and universities, and develops the rankings based
on a statistical assessment of 16 academic standards. Those standards
are based on data measuring such such factors as academic reputation,
retention of students, graduation rates, resources for faculty,
student selectivity and alumni giving.
