The Citadel Hosts Lowcountry Toothpick Bridge Contest

The Citadel Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering are kicking off National Engineers’ Week 1999 locally by hosting the Lowcountry Toothpick Bridge Contest on February 20 at 9:00 a.m. in Grimsley Hall Auditorium on The Citadel campus.

Toothpick bridges, built and designed by area middle school students using only toothpicks and carpenters’ wood glue, will be tested for load to weight ratio. There will also be a category based on the bridges’ aesthetic qualities.

Both the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering will also have lab demonstrations as well as poster sessions displaying senior design projects.

National Engineers’ Week is from February 21-27. The Charleston Joint Council of Engineers is providing funding for the awards and student participation ribbons for the toothpick bridge contest.
