Citadel Professor Promoted to Brigadier General

The Citadel’s Friday afternoon dress parade on February 12 will host the promotion ceremony of a distinguished alumnus and faculty member. Colonel Michael B. Barrett, U.S. Army Reserve and Citadel class of 1968, has been selected for promotion to Brigadier General.

Major General Hawthorne Proctor will be conducting the ceremony. Gen. Proctor is the deputy chief of staff, Logistics and Operations, Army Material Command in Washington D.C. Citadel President Major General Grinalds and Barrett’s wife Sara Barrett will also participate in the ceremony.

Barrett, a Citadel faculty member since 1976, is an associate professor of history and a specialist in the field of Weimar and Third Reich Germany. Barrett’s activities at The Citadel, however, are not limited to teaching. He was dean of graduate studies from 1985 until 1990.

Graduating from The Citadel in 1968, Barrett went on to earn his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts. He is also a graduate of the Army War College and Command General Staff College. Barrett is married to the former Sara H. McKerley of Charleston. They have a son Michael M. Barrett, Citadel class of 1997, who is now an Army second lieutenant serving at F. Benning, Ga.
