24 February 1998

The Citadel announced today that the 1998 Summerall Guards will continue their training with the 1999 Bond Volunteers and conclude in time for the March Corps Day ceremony.

Following tradition, the changing of the Summerall Guards will take place on Saturday, March 14, at 9:00 a.m. during Corps Day Weekend. During the ceremony the 1998 Summerall Guards will relinquish their rifles to the 1999 Summerall Guards who will then present their first public performance.

The administration and the 1998 Summerall Guards have agreed in principle to a constitution which will ensure the continuance of the long tradition of excellence associated with the drill platoon. The constitution lays to rest the concerns of the administration regarding the training and the performance routine of the Guards.

Woody Francis, Commander of the 1998 Summerall Guards said, "I am glad that we have reached a resolution. The Guards always have and always will faithfully support The Citadel."

Major General John S. Grinalds, president of The Citadel, stated, " I am proud of the way the 1998 Summerall Guards have diplomatically handled the situation. I am pleased that this has been settled and the Guards have agreed to march forward."
