BAND DIRECTOR AWARDED CITATION OF EXCELLENCE

CHARLESTON, S.C., Feb. 17 - Retired Marine Corps Major Herbert L. Day, director of The Citadel Regimental Band, was awarded the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence for his superb endeavors on behalf of bands and band music at the South Carolina Music Educators' 50th Annual Conference in Greenville on Saturday.

During his twenty-four-year career in the Marine Corps, he served as director of the Quantico Marine Band, director of the 3rd Marine Division Band, officer-in-charge of the Marine Element at the Armed Force Forces School of Music, and director of the Marine Field Band and Drum and Bugle Corps Program. Major Day earned a bachelor's degree in music at St. Leo College, Fla., and went on to graduate from the Bandmasters Advanced Course, Armed Forces School of Music.

In 1984 Major Day joined the staff at The Citadel where he says, "It's an honor to serve at a college that truly understands the value of arts and art education in the life of our students."
