CHARLESTON, S.C.,(Feb. 27)--Citadel Cadet Lt. Col. Joseph L. Graham III of Timmonsville received the MacArthur Cadet of the Year Award recently during an awards ceremony at The Citadel. The MacArthur award is presented to a senior cadet who demonstrates outstanding qualities in academic, military and athletic endeavors.
The General Douglas MacArthur Foundation presents the award to cadets who attend institutions in the Association of Military Colleges and Schools. The foundation encourages students to emulate and practice the qualities of General MacArthur who was a cadet at West Texas Military Institute and the U.S. Military Academy.
Lt. Gen. Claudius E. Watts, III, president of The Citadel, presented Graham an engraved replica of the medal struck by Congress in 1962 honoring MacArthur; a cadet uniform emblem; a U.S. Savings Bond; and a copy of MacArthur's autobiography, Reminiscences.
"Cadet Graham has demonstrated those qualities which have gained for him the reputation of a gentleman, a self starter and an enthusiastic leader in the Corps of Cadets," the citation read.
Cadet Graham majors in business administration and is commander of First Battalion at the military college. He has been named to the Dean's List, President's List, Commandant's Distinguished Service List and the 1995 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He holds an Air Force ROTC scholarship and has been honored as a distinguished Air Force student. He is a member of the Air Force Field Training Preparation.
Graham is a member of The Citadel Accounting Club and a volunteer for the IRS Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program. He is an Eagle Scout and has received Order of the Arrow from the Boys Scouts of America.
He is the son of Joseph Jr. and Rita Graham of 505 Park Street.
