November 7, 1998
At
a surprise ceremony held during The Citadel's homecoming weekend
on Nov. 7, 1998, Cadet Rhett Blackmon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Blackmon of Charlotte, N.C., was awarded the Colonel Loring K.
Himelright Scholarship for his outstanding performance as a civil
engineering student.
Col.
Himelright, the former civil engineering department head for whom
the scholarship is named, presented Cadet Blackmon with a plaque
and a check. The Colonel Loring K. Himelright Scholarship Fund
was founded by civil engineering alumni upon the retirement of
Col. Himelright in 1981 to establish a scholarship in his honor
for distinguished civil engineering students. The scholarship
fund currently provides an annual scholarship award to a rising
civil engineering senior as selected by the department faculty
in the amount of $1000.
Cadet
Blackmon is currently president of The Citadel's chapter of the
American Society of Civil Engineering.
