GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

CHARLESTON, S.C., Sept. 4.--The public is invited to The Citadel's first dress parade of the school year and to remain for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new barracks. The parade will take place on Friday, September 5, at 3:45 p.m. on Summerall field with the groundbreaking ceremony to follow.

The entire Corps will march in review to honor the 188 cadets who achieved Gold Star Status last Spring Semester. Gold Stars are awarded for at taining a grade point average of 3.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale

The new barracks is part of a project that began six years ago and includes Coward Hall - the cadet dining facility which opened in 1991 - and Watts Barracks which is now in its second year of occupancy.

The new facility replaces Murray Barracks, which was built in 1926 and was occupied through the 1995-1996 academic year. Demolition of old Murray Barracks began in October 1996. Board of Visitors Chairman Francis P. Mood Jr. will make the principal remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony. Citadel president, Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds will welcome guests, and the regimental commander, Cadet Colonel Brett Strand will speak briefly.

Visitors are urged to arrive early in order to obtain convenient parking.
