MEMORIAL SERVICE SET FOR LEGENDARY PROFESSOR

CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 13.--A memorial service for the late professor Walter Bland Mathis will be held in the Summerall Chapel at The Citadel on Tuesday, October 21 at 4 p.m.

Mathis taught British literature and composition for 36 years. He was a member of The Citadel's class of 1958. Mathis earned a master's degree from Harvard University in 1959 and one year later joined the faculty at the military college.

Professor Mathis has been recognized on many occasions for his legendary presence in the classroom. Major General Roger C. Poole, Vice President of Academic Affairs, says, "I had the privilege of knowing and studying with Bland Mathis as a cadet and then later the pleasure of working with him as a member of the faculty. As a young man Bland was an outstanding cadet and student, and one of the most caring individuals I ever knew. As an adult he was the epitome of the teacher, scholar, and humanitarian."

Contributions to the Mathis Memorial fund may be sent to the Office of Institutional Advancement at The Citadel or for additional information contact Col. James Rembert, chairman of the Mathis Memorial Committee, at 953-5137.
