CHARLESTON, S.C., Nov. 12.--The Citadel won the the Army ROTC Fifth Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition in the latter part of October. This was the sixth year in a row that the school won.
The two-day competition is held annually at Fort Jackson. Twenty-five schools from South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia sent teams of students to compete in the competition. The Citadel fielded two teams; the second team won fourth place.
The eight event competition comprises the Army Physical Fitness Test (a timed test of pushups, situps, and a two mile run), the Land Navigation Test (an hour long written test on land navigation skills), Basic Rifle Marksman- ship, Orienteering (a squad of nine is given an hour to locate specific points, One Rope Bridge Construction (in under six minutes the team constructs a one- rope bridge and transfers supplies and personnel across a water obstacle), Hand Grenade Assault Course (hand grenades are thrown for accuracy in a timed test), Weapons Assembly (team members put together disassembled M-16 rifles and M-60 machine guns), 10 K Forced Road March (in a timed test, members of teams trans- port rucksacks 10K).
