The Citadel names new athletic director to lead the Bulldogs
Senter to begin in time for football season
The Citadel’s new athletic director made his first appearance today during a news conference at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Jim Senter, who last served as a senior associate athletic director at the University of Colorado, will join The Military College of South Carolina in time for the Bulldog’s first football game on Aug. 30.
Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa praised Senter’s experience. “Jim Senter clearly demonstrates values that align with our mission to develop principled leaders on and off the field while adhering to practices of academic excellence, as driven by a passionate focus to compete successfully in the Southern Conference,” said Rosa.
Senter told reporters The Citadel’s core values were instrumental in his decision to accept the position. “The Citadel is about common people having an uncommon desire to do uncommon things.”
Senter also said his experience both on and off the field makes him the ideal fit for the job. “I spent 15 years being a very successful coach. At the same time, to go from coaching into administration, you’ve got to see a bigger picture, and I feel like I can do both,” he said.
Tee Hooper, class of ’69 and an All-Conference Bulldog basketball player, chaired the search committee which conducted a nationwide search with the assistance of the firm Eastman and Beaudine.
“I would like to thank the committee for their concentrated and diligent work,” said Rosa. “Several of the most outstanding candidates were evaluated, but Jim was our top choice due to his potential to move Bulldog athletics forward on a clear and confident path.”
Rosa also thanked interim Athletics Director Rob Acunto for his leadership during the search. Acunto will return to his position of compliance director for the athletics department.
Senter replaces Larry Leconby who left The Citadel in May when he was named the new athletics director at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.
