The Citadel Family reaches out to the people of Haiti
Citadel cadets, graduate students and cadet athletes have joined many others from around the world to raise money for the American Red Cross in support of earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
On Jan. 21, the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and the Class of 2010 raised $1,023 at the “Help Us Help Haiti” benefit concert. About 150 people attended the live music benefit.
"This idea came to me because I wondered how our government was going help, but I realized that as Americans the question really was ‘What are we going to do as individuals to help,'" said Cadet Trey Swinton. "I am thrilled that cadets supported this event to help people in Haiti."
The Citadel Graduate College Student Government Association has launched a drive to raise money and collect non-perishable food items and clothing. Items can be dropped off at the CGC offices on the first floor of Bond Hall between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Fridays today through Feb. 5. For information call 843-953-5089.
"I think it is important for The Citadel and the Lowcountry as a whole to help the people of Haiti who have endured so much during this tragedy," said Richard Bush, MBA 2010 and president of the SGA.
And in support of two cadet athletes from Haiti, The Citadel Athletics Department will collect money at the basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 23 and at the wrestling competition on Sunday, Jan. 24 in McAlister Field House.
Freshman football player Sadath Jean Pierre and sophomore wrestler Pierre Frazile are from Haiti and still have family living there. Their immediate family members are OK but like many Haitians are in need of help as the recovery effort goes on.
Athletic department staff with American Red Cross signage will be located at the entrances of McAlister Field House. Cash or check donations will be accepted. Make checks payable to the "American Red Cross" and write "Haiti" on the "For" line. For more information on athletics relief effort call 843-953-5120.
