Dr. Alison Smith

Dr. Alison Smith was born in Charleston and grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. She completed a BA in French and Politics at Wake Forest University, and she earned her MA and Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. She wrote her dissertation on the French films of Luis Buñuel, and she is interested in 20th century and contemporary literature and film in France and the Hispanic world. Dr. Smith has taught French, Spanish, English, Honors Western Civilization and Women's and Gender Studies at a variety of educational institutions, including Wake Forest University and The College of Charleston, where she served as the Associate Director of Women's and Gender Studies. She has also developed courses for students with learning disabilities and conducted training workshops on teaching second languages to students with learning and other disabilities. Dr. Smith enjoys traveling and has directed study abroad trips to France, Spain, Austria, Germany and Italy. She also served as faculty advisor for Alternative Break trips to Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica while at The College of Charleston.
