Citadel Marines launch Thanksgiving food drive

Citadel Marines are taking their drive to feed the needy during Thanksgiving to the Charleston community this year. Donation bins will be located on campus and at three Mount Pleasant locations.

Since 2004, The Citadel Marine ROTC unit in coordination with the Lowcountry Food Bank has conducted a Thanksgiving food drive. Last year, more than 8,000 non-perishable food items went to soup kitchens and shelters throughout the greater Charleston area.

“The Citadel’s participation in this year’s food drive is highly anticipated by the Lowcountry Food Bank,” said Col. Paul B. Dunahoe, commanding officer of Naval ROTC at The Citadel. “Times are tight for everyone, but there are those who need extra help, and this will hopefully help ease the burden of feeding many needy people over the holiday season.”

The Marines will collect non-perishable food donations throughout November. Donations bins will be located at:

  • Whole Foods at 923 Houston Northcutt Blvd.
  • Shane's Rib Shack at 1909 North Highway 17
  • Low Country Volkswagen at 1001 Johnnie Dodds Blvd.

Cadets also will donate time to the food drive. Instead of going on leave, they will staff the Whole Foods donation bins from 5 to 7 p.m. every Friday and from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturdays until Thanksgiving.

Donation bins also will be located on The Citadel campus in Bond Hall, Jenkins Hall, Mark Clark Hall, Capers Hall, Thompson Hall and the Daniel Library.
