Citadel Marines to dedicate Malcom memorial
The Citadel Naval ROTC detachment will dedicate a memorial to a Marine killed in Iraq at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1 in Jenkins Hall Auditorium.
Marine 1st Lt. Dan T. Malcom Jr., Class of 2001, was killed in November 2004 in Fallujah. He was an infantry officer in 1st Battalion 8th Marines. Since his death, Citadel Marines, members of the class of 2001, and alumni and donors in the local and regional area have raised more than $28,000 for the Malcom scholarship and sword fund. A Marine Corps Mameluke sword in Malcom’s name is awarded to the top Marine Option Citadel cadet annually.
In addition to the Malcom scholarship, a solid mahogany memorial and sword display will permanently house a photo of Malcom, his Bronze Star Citation, his Bronze Star, Purple Heart, the sniper bullet that killed him and a Mameluke sword.
Malcom is one of 12 Citadel graduates to die in Iraq, Afghanistan or in support of the war on terror. In addition, more than 1,250 Citadel graduates are or have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003.
