Cadets run to save Morris Island Lighthouse
Eighteen students from The Citadel’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter participated in Save the Light’s half-marathon and 5K. The event was held in February on Folly Beach.
The race supports Save the Light, a non-profit organization that was formed to prevent the lighthouse from being lost to sea, and is responsible for planning, engineering, fund raising, and executing all preservation projects.
Cadet Nathan Jackson, a sophomore in the civil and environmental engineering program, placed second in the half marathon with a time of 1:21:48. Participation of The Citadel cadets led to a donation of over $400 to assist in Save The Light’s efforts to preserve this historic structure.
Since 2000 when Save the Light was created, more than $4,500,000 has been raised in federal, state, and local funds. In March of 2008, phase I was completed. Phase I consisted of constructing a steel cofferdam around the base and large stones around the perimeter to prevent from further erosion. In Phase II, which has begun and will cost about $500,000 to complete, the soil around the existing timber piles is being injected with grout to stabilize the foundation.
