Foreign Language Requirement and Placement Exam The Citadel requires two semesters in the same language for most majors except engineering and education. Some departments might require three or more semesters. The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers four languages in which you may fulfill the general education requirement. If you wish to continue with the French, German, or Spanish you studied in high school, you must take The Citadel’s Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE). Your score will determine the level at which you will continue your foreign language study at The Citadel. If you wish to continue with Chinese you studied in high school, The Chinese Placement Exam will be conducted on campus through an interview with a Chinese professor during the advising period.
Students who do continue with the same language studied in High School cannot start below the 102 level (second semester of elementary French, Chinese, German or Spanish).

Mathematics Placement Process
All students who elect to major in Biochemistry, Chemistry (B.S.), Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics are required to take a calculus sequence starting with MATH 131, Analytic Geometry and Calculus I. Other students may also elect to take MATH 131, for example, if they are considering the pursuit of a minor in Applied Mathematics or in Applied Statistics or if they want to earn an American Chemical Society certificate as a Chemistry (B.A.) major. Our experience shows that some students entering college for the first time are not sufficiently prepared for the rigors of freshman calculus and require a semester of precalculus or an additional semester of college algebra with trigonometry prior taking precalculus before attempting MATH 131. At The Citadel, our college algebra with trigonometry and precalculus courses are MATH 118 (College Algebra with Trigonometry) and MATH 119 (Precalculus). In order to help us determine the appropriate mathematics course for incoming freshmen, we have a placement process that is based primarily on the Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE)
, which covers the basics of algebra and trigonometry. If you fall into any of the categories listed above, you are required to take the MPE online between May 1 and August 1.
For detailed instructions on registering and preparing for the MPE, please visit the website of MPE at: http://macs.citadel.edu/chenm/pltest.dir/Math_Placement.dir/math_placement_2019.html
