Hispanic Heritage Month Panel

The Citadel Office of Multicultural and International Student Services is Proud to Present Our First Hispanic Heritage Month Discussion Panel

Tuesday, 18 September, 2018 at 1800 hours
Bond Hall 165

Topic – Latinos in American Society: Finding the Balance Between Integration and Identity

Moderator: Chaplain of the Corps, Cmdr Joe Molina

Panelists:
Father Gildardo Garcia, USAF – Religion and Community
Attorney Dana Fields – Legal and Immigration issues
Dr. Angela Cozart, CofC – Higher Education

Latinos/Hispanics have a rich heritage and culture they bring with them when they come to our country and they are passionate about passing that culture and heritage to their children. At the same time, Latinos/Hispanics are part of the American cultural and societal landscape and must find ways to improve their relationships in their adopted homeland. Indeed, much of the racial and cultural conflict comes from a perception of an unwillingness to surrender their own cultural identity and what is seen as a failure to integrate sufficiently into the American cultural and societal identity. For this reason, it is important that Latinos/Hispanics find the balance between that cultural identity and the societal integration. The panelists will discuss whether one necessarily precludes the other.

Our panel will be discussing this matter from the perspectives of religion, community, legal and immigration issues and higher education. After the panelists present their perspectives and their thoughts on this topic, we will have a Q&A session. These questions will be anonymous unless otherwise indicated by you. Please select which panelist to whom you would like your question directed, if you have a preference, based on the topic they are discussing. Then write your question in the comment box below.

Please understand that we will not have time to answer all the questions that are submitted. We are not avoiding the hard questions. To the contrary, we want to have the difficult discussions and ask the hard questions.
