Welcome to the Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Science

Welcome to the Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Science. We are located in Deas Hall on The Citadel Campus. We invite you to visit us at any time.

Our department is one of the largest in the College of Science and Mathematics with over 150 undergraduates and approximately 40 graduate students.  We have many courses from which to choose at the undergraduate and graduate level and include degrees in the areas of physical education, exercise science, and sport management. Follow the "Academics" hyperlink to find details regarding the academic programs and courses available in our department.

Although we are diverse department, we provide strong programming for majors. We are leaders in the college as it relates to external grants, with current external funding for 2017 totaling over $400,000. Due to our strong research focus, we seek to develop our students in their abilities to conduct research, thereby, better preparing our graduates for health-related graduate schools or professions.

As it relates to research, we invite you to check out our Program of Distinction, The Dr. Hank Cross Human Performance Laboratory.  It is in this laboratory we have been able to conduct research related to mouthpiece use and performance and been awarded external funding to conduct concussion and traumatic brain injury research.  In addition, our faculty excel in presenting research regionally and nationally.

Examples include:

Injuries in Collegiate Women's Volleyball

Mouthpiece Use and Effects on Cortisol

Development of a National Physical Activity Plan

Effects of Bikram Yoga on Body Composition, Blood Pressure and Sleep Patterns

Battling Obesity with Quality Physical Education Programming

There are so many exciting endeavors in our department, that we ask you to check back periodically for updates and announcements.
