John O. Willson Ring

The Willson Ring has been awarded annually since 1911 to a senior elected by his or her peers as the finest, purest and most courteous member of the class. Willson, who was a Citadel student until 1862 when he left to join the Confederate Army, established the award to honor the most popular student among his or her peers.

Cadet Captain Tyler C. Gibbs' mission in life has been to help others. He has displayed his commitment to the success of his fellow cadets through his leadership and compassion from the first day he arrived on the Citadel campus.

Among his many activities as a cadet, he has served as the Third Battalion Religious Officer this past year. Other cadets seek him out for guidance and he is known across campus as a caring person who always shoulders his leadership responsibilities.

This spring he was named the recipient of the Carlisle Norwood Hastie Award. He was selected by his classmates for this award by showing the most tact, consideration, and courtesy to fellow cadets.

Cadet Captain Tyler C. Gibbs exemplifies the traits most valuable in a person who leads others, who achieves academic excellence, and who devotes himself to The Citadel and humanity.

Achieving excellence in the education and development of principled leaders
