The James A. Grimsley, Jr. Award for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence

Kyle S. Sinisi, associate professor of history, graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1984 with a BA in history. Following four years of active duty service in the United States Army, he attended Kansas State University where he earned both the MA and Ph.D. Before coming to The Citadel in 1994, Sinisi taught one year at Georgia Southern University.

Sinisi has taught a variety of history courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and specializes in the study of the government and military of the Civil War era. He is the author of Sacred Debts: State Civil War Claims and American Federalism, 1861-1880 and a co-editor of Warm Ashes: Issues in Southern History at the Dawn of the Twenty-First Century. He is currently at work on a book-length manuscript that examines Sterling Price's Confederate invasion of Missouri in 1864.

Kyle S. Sinisi is a charismatic professor. He captures students' attention through the effective use of lecture, discussion, and multimedia technology. A large, and loyal, following of cadets routinely fill any course that he teaches. They also regularly clog the hallway outside his office waiting to take advantage of the help and advice he so generously gives.

The success of his students in competition for academic awards, the stellar evaluations he receives, and his membership in both Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education, and Who's Who Among America's Teachers all testify to his many accomplishments in the classroom - for which he is this year's recipient of The James A. Grimsley, Jr. Award for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence.

Achieving excellence in the education and development of principled leaders
