MBA professor and student honored with commencement awards

The Citadel School of Business Administration on Sunday honored one of its own as MBA Outstanding Professor of the Year and recognized a graduating student as MBA Outstanding Student of the Year.

The awards were presented during commencement exercises for The Citadel's College of Graduate and Professional Studies, the evening undergraduate and graduate school.

Each year Master's of Business Administration students are asked to vote for a professor they believe exemplifies the qualities of Outstanding Professor of the Year. This year the students chose Mark A. Bebensee.

Bebensee is associate dean of business administration and associate professor of economics at The Citadel. He earned his undergraduate degree from Millsaps College and his masters and doctorate from Duke University. In his 29-year career at The Citadel, Bebensee also served as assistant dean of undergraduate studies for seven years and was head of the business administration department for 13 years. Over his Citadel career he has previously received the Palmetto Medal, the Grimsley Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.

In 2004 on the occasion of the graduation of their son, Jared, Dan and Nancy Kohl established a scholarship in Bebensee's honor. Bebensee had been a teacher and an advisor for both Dan and Jared when they were cadets. This past November, the Citadel Alumni Association honored him by naming him an Honorary Lifetime Member, making him only the second non-alumnus faculty member ever to receive this recognition.

In addition to his duties in the School of Business, Bebensee also served as The Citadel's chapel organist for many years, and he still plays for weddings and official college functions. Each year for the last decade he has read the names of graduates as they cross the stage during both CGPS and Corps of Cadets commencements.

This year's MBA Outstanding Student of the Year is Brunella Caldas of Marietta, Ga.

Faculty members who teach in the MBA program determined the outstanding student of the year. It is presented to a graduate who has demonstrated an exceptional record of academic achievement and principled leadership within the MBA program.

A native of Brazil, Brunella is a graduate of the College of Charleston where she received the Outstanding Student Award for Management and Marketing by the Business & Economics Department. Upon graduation she took a job with Samuel Shapiro & Company, Inc., a leading customhouse broker and international freight forwarder. She's been with Samuel Shapiro for almost seven years and has worked in several capacities, most recently as a Business Development Manager.

The MBA Student of the Year award is presented to a graduate student who has performed with excellence in all required MBA coursework, has demonstrated outstanding leadership among his or her peers, and has acted with integrity and moral soundness while attending The Citadel.
