Transportation undersecretary speaks at Free Enterprise luncheon
The Free Enterprise Foundation (FEF) will host a luncheon to honor Mack I. Whittle, Jr., recipient of the Free Enterprise Award for Business Ethics and Civic Responsibility. The honorable Jeff Shane, U.S. undersecretary of transportation, will speak. The luncheon will begin at noon, March 1 at The Citadel Alumni Center. The cost is $50 per person. The Free Enterprise Award recognizes South Carolina business and civic program leaders who have a positive impact on their communities. Whittle currently serves as president and CEO of The South Financial Group as well as chairman and CEO of Carolina First Bank. He is a member of the Greenville Hospital System’s Office of Philanthropy and Partnership Chairman’s Council, a member of the SC Department of Education’s task force to evaluate strengths and weaknesses in the public high school curriculum and a member of the USC Board of Trustees.
Following the award presentation, Shane will speak. Shane was appointed by President Bush as Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy in March 2003 following his confirmation by the United States Senate. In this position, he supervises the Department of Transportation and serves as principal policy advisor to the Secretary of Transportation.
