James S. Leonard

Professor

Jim Leonard, after ten years of non-academic work in city and government planning, opted for a change to an academic career, completing his Ph.D. at Brown University in 1983 and joining the English Department faculty at The Citadel in the same year. He has severed as full professor at The Citadel since 1983, including a year as Chair of the Faculty Council and ten years as English Department Head. His areas of teaching specialization are American Literature and Critical Theory.

Prof. Leonard has authored numerous articles in scholarly journals, essays for inclusion in edited books, and scholarly conference papers - mostly in the field of American Literature.  He is coauthor (with C.E. Wharton) of a book on Wallace Stevens (publsihed in 1988 and re-published in paperback in 2016) and editor or coeditor of essay collections on Mark Twain and on collaborative writing.  He is particularly known for his work on Twain - having served as Editor of the Mark Twain Circular (1987-2008), Managing Editor of The Mark Twain Annual (2004-present), and Managing Editor/Editor-at-Large of the Mark Twain Journal (2012-present).  He has also served a two-year term as President of the Mark Twain Circle of America and has co-chaired the quadrennial State of Mark Twain Studies Conference.  

Leonard joined the editorial team of Prentice-Hall/Longman's Anthology of American Literature for the Eighth Edition (2003), then became the principal editor of the Anthology for the Ninth (2007) and the Tenth (2010) editions.
