Kathryn Hansen

Assistant Professor

Kathryn Strong Hansen is The Citadel’s specialist in eighteenth-century British literature. Additionally, she directs the internship program for the English department and teaches English 101 for international students.

Professor Hansen has published articles on empathy in eighteenth-century novels, Samuel Richardson’s 1740 novel Pamela, and graphic novels. Currently at work on a manuscript that examines the links between women’s dress and the perceived respectability of the novel in eighteenth-century Britain, her additional research interests include children’s literature, gender, and visual culture.

She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Southern California and also holds an M.A. and B.A. from the University of North Texas. Previously a holder of a stockbroker's license (called a Series 7), Professor Hansen also earned a secondary level teaching certificate and is an associate director of the Lowcountry Writing Project, the local chapter of the National Writing Project that supports K-12 teachers.
