Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Receives Three National Awards
Timothy W. Mays, Ph.D., P.E., Associate Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering program at The Citadel has received three prestigious national awards in the last 2 months. In the area of teaching, Dr. Mays was named the first ever winner of the NCSEA Susan M. Frey Engineering Educator Award. According to NCSEA, “The Susan M. Frey NCSEA Educator Award is presented to an individual who has a genuine interest in, and extraordinary talent for, effective instruction for practicing structural engineers. The award was established to honor the memory of Sue Frey, one of NCSEA’s finest instructors, who passed away in May, 2013.” Two weeks later, Dr. Mays was named the 2014 winner of the David L. Kelly Distinguished Engineer Award, a prestigious national award given each year by the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) to an individual for “outstanding design contributions and leadership” in structural engineering. The award recognized Dr. Mays work as the primary author of the first ever textbook on “Tilt-Up Concrete,” a unique form of concrete construction used all across the United States. On October 29, 2014 at a special reception held at LeTellier Hall, The Citadel Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was awarded 2nd place ($7,500 cash prize to the CEE Department) in the NCEES Engineering Award for Connecting Professional Practice and Education for incorporation of design related activities into the classroom. As part of the required senior capstone class, for both cadet and evening classes, students were actively involved in the Wave Dissipation System design process including the political ramifications from the research. In the summer of 2014, the Wave Dissipation System research led to SC State Senate, House of Representatives, and the Governor approval of tested and approved alternate systems other than sandbags, for use on SC beaches. Dr. Mays has served as the principal investigator for this project over the past two years.
