ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #11: FRIDAY, 12/20/13, 1205 hrs.

The Citadel’s Office of Information Technology Services is grateful to The Citadel community for everyone’s patience and cooperation during the college’s data center upgrade and relocation project.

The first phase of the project has been completed with the successful relocation of IT equipment and software to a more secure facility in Ladson. Student records, finances and other sensitive data and equipment will now be monitored 24 hours a day. The off-campus location also makes these systems immune to campus power outages.

We’re now beginning the second phase of the transition that will involve two more periods of downtime, during which, some campus-wide communication systems will again be interrupted. They are as follows:

  • Dec. 20th – Dec. 23rd: campus email will be offline for data migration and system improvements – downtime begins at 1700 hrs. or earlier if the campus close of business is changed.
  • Dec 27th – Dec. 30th: Banner-related maintenance will make certain operating systems inaccessible during this three day period. They are: Internet Native Banner, BannerWeb, Lesesne Gateway, ODS/EDW, Infirmary and Cadet systems.

All expected downtime will occur during the winter furlough, when use of the system is at its lowest. Again, we regret any inconvenience you may encounter, but this is a vital work to ensure the long-term success of the college and to provide top-quality service for all members of The Citadel community.

As always, contact the ITS Help Center at 953-4357 if you encounter any problems.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #10: SUNDAY, 12/01/13, 2105 hrs.

Services for all production systems of the campus have been restored and tested positive.

As always, if you encounter any problems please contact the ITS Help Center at 843-953-4357.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #9: SUNDAY, 12/01/13, 1710 hrs.

Campus email service has been restored.

Banner, Lesesne Gateway, and other operational systems continue to be tested and brought back online.

Please be aware that some systems may appear to be working, but could display unexpected issues. If you encounter any problems, please contact the ITS Help Center at 953-4357.

We thank the entire community of The Citadel for your patience and understanding as we work to make these important upgrades fully functional.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #8: SUNDAY, 12/01/13, 1020 hrs.

After a long and exhausting night by the transition team, all faculty and staff Exchange email service has been restored, though service may be sluggish at first as the system resets a few days of backlog data.

Restoration of Banner and other systems will follow. Designated testers will be notified soon when they can begin their test protocols. The next update will be posted by 1700 hrs., or earlier as needed.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #7: SATURDAY, 11/30/13, 1722 hrs.

All reinstallation of equipment is proceeding as scheduled in Ladson. No aberrations have been encountered. Next week, we will post photos of the move. "I'm sorry, did you say spaghetti...?" These guys are very good!

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #6: SATURDAY, 11/30/13, 1015 hrs.

The Data Center transition continues on schedule.

Equipment is being removed from the Bond Hall data center and loaded into moving vans. They will depart campus this morning for the new Ladson center.

The next update will be posted by 1700 hrs. today.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #5: FRIDAY, 11/29/13, 1704 hrs.

Systems being relocated are powered down and network reconfiguration in in progress, as planned. The transition project remains on schedule.

Next update will be posted by 1030 hrs. tomorrow, Saturday.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #4: FRIDAY, 11/29/13, 1026 hrs.

All systems are being shut down according to the transition plan. Those people with smart phones checking email will likely see connection error messages. The next progress update will be posted today by 1700 hrs.

As always, if you encounter any problems please contact the ITS Help Center at 843-953-4357.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #3: THANKSGIVING DAY, 11/28/13, 1125 hrs.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO THE CITADEL FAMILY!

The Data Center transition process is continuing as planned. All backup sessions are in progress.

We give special recognition to the ITS Data Center Transition team members who are working this Thanksgiving to help ensure this important upgrade stays on track. We acknowledge their hard work on this Holiday! Thank you!

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #2: WEDNESDAY, 11/27/13, 1650 hrs.

The Data Center transition is proceeding as planned. Campus email and other communications systems are now offline as part of the move. Again, if you try to access email, it may appear to be working, but it may not be receiving and delivering messages as you intend. Please use telephone and text services to be sure your communications are reaching your audiences as you wish.

If you encounter any problems please contact the ITS Help Center at 843-953-4357.

ITS DATA CENTER UPDATE #1: TUESDAY, 11/26/13, 1040 hrs.

Members of The Citadel Community, please check this Spotlight for daily updates on the campus ITS transition of our data center during the Thanksgiving break. Updates will be posted every morning by 10:30 a.m. and every afternoon by 5:30 p.m. On Sunday afternoon, we will post a status of operable systems following the ITS testing process. At this point, we anticipate full operability by 1:00 a.m. Monday.

Again, it is important to know that between 27 Nov and 1 Dec, if you try to access email or other systems, they might APPEAR TO BE WORKING, but likely will not be. If you expect to receive messages or try to send them, be assured they will not be lost, but their transmission will be delayed.

FRIDAY, 11/22/13

The Office of Information Technology Services will soon begin implementing a data center relocation plan. Over the next several weeks, IT equipment and software will be transferred to a secure facility in Ladson with additional backup at a Greenville location. This will provide greater security and an improved environment for optimal IT operations.

Limiting the negative impact on campus communication has been the main consideration in developing this plan. However, we apologize for anyone who is inconvenienced during this important transition process.

To accommodate this move, there will be three periods of functional downtime when the campus wide email communication system will be interrupted:

  • Nov. 27th – Dec. 1st: physical move to Ladson – downtime begins at 12:00
  • Dec. 20th – Dec. 23rd: email related data migration – downtime begins at 17:00 or close of business
  • Dec. 27th – Dec. 30th: Banner related maintenance – downtime all three days

During those times, the Lesesne Gateway portal, campus email, file sharing and operational systems (Banner) will be inaccessible. This will prevent students from processing payments, viewing grades or registering for classes. Access to Human Resources forms and other documents will also be unavailable during this time. If you are trying to transact business and cannot access the campus portal as usual, you will not be assessed any late fees or penalized in any other way. All expected downtime will occur during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks.

You will still be able to access CitLearn, the Daniel Library website and your Google Webmail. Please note the following direct links to these systems:

The Citadel’s main website, The Citadel Foundation website and campus telephones will also remain accessible.

The Citadel’s main website and The Citadel Foundation website will not be affected. Telephones will also be unaffected.

If any unforeseen problems arise during the migration process, a contingency plan will be distributed.

Again, we regret any inconvenience, but this is a critical step to ensure the long-term success of the college, and to provide top quality service for all members of The Citadel community.

If you encounter any problems please contact the ITS Help Center at 843-953-4357.

Thank you for your patience as we make our computer systems safer and more reliable.
