Donald L. Sparks, PhD

Dr. Donald Sparks is Professor of International Economics and Director of the Office of Fellowships at the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina where he has been named outstanding MBA professor of the year three times. He is a University Lecturer with the International Business and Law Program for the Management Center in Innsbruck, Austria. He served for eleven years as a visiting professor with Stetson University's Summer Business Program also in Innsbruck, Austria.  Dr. Sparks is also the Senior Consulting Associate for the Office of Economic Analysis in the U.S. Department of State.

Before coming to the Citadel, Dr Sparks served as a Staff Assistant to Senator Ernest F Hollings in Washington, DC and as an International Economist with the US Department of State. In 2005 he was Fulbright Professor of Economics at the University of Maribor (Slovenia), in 2003 he was a Fulbright Senior Specialist at the University of Swaziland, in 2000-2001 he was Visiting Professor and Chairman of the Department of Economics at the American University in Cairo, and in 1996-97 he was Fulbright Professor of Economics at the University of Swaziland. Dr Sparks serves as a
member of the review committee for the Fulbright Specialists Program and is president of the SC Chapter of the Fulbright Association.

Dr Sparks received his BA from the George Washington University and his MA and PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has co-authored two economic textbooks and numerous journal articles. Dr Sparks has lectured widely in sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and North America. His research interests are on monetary integration in Southern Africa, public-private partnerships and economic development.

He and his wife, Katherine Saenger, live in Charleston, South Carolina and Seefeld in Tirol, Austria, and have two children.
