Distinguished Alumnus Award
The Citadel School of Business Alumnus of the Year Award is given annually to honor a graduate who has enjoyed success and made significant contributions to the community through the principles of integrity, fairness and concern for others, as well as the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge to promote enlightened changes in society and the desire to personally improve and grow.
2012 – Niall Gannon (Class of 1990)
Gannon, Citadel Class of 1990, executive director of Wealth Management at The Gannon Group in Clayton, Mo.
During his time at The Citadel, Gannon was a well-rounded cadet. He participated in Students in Free Enterprise, the Society of HR Management, the Marine Bulldog Platoon, and was a member of the Regimental Band and Pipes. During his senior year, Gannon was the pipe band drum major and the Catholic parish president. After graduating, Gannon was commissioned in the Army and served as a lieutenant in the 194th Armored Brigade (KYARNG) as an M1 Abram's tank platoon leader. In 2001, he endowed a scholarship in memory of his classmate, Milton Palmer, '90. In 2008, he and members of his class endowed a scholarship in memory of classmate, the late Father Lee Selzer, director of pastoral ministry to the Hispanic community in Charleston. He died in 2007.
Gannon authored "Investing Strategies for the High Net-Worth Investor: Maximize Returns on Taxable Portfolios." His research on after-tax investing has been called pioneering and has received recognition from academia and the national financial media.
Gannon is an active member within the Institute for Private Investors and from 2008 to 2010, served on the CFA Institute Committee for the development of investment policy statements for high net worth investors. In 2008, he was honored as Portfolio Manager of the Year by the Portfolio Management Institute. Barron's named him one of the nation's top financial advisors in 2004.
Gannon is a past director of Junior Achievement of Mississippi Valley, Connections to Success and St. Louis Variety. He is also musical director of the St. Louis Irish Arts Youth Instrumental Group, former president of the St. Louis Irish Arts, and former chairman of the 2006 Annual Catholic Appeal. For his outstanding work in these and other areas, Gannon received the Silver Congressional Award and is a four-time recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Awards.
2011 – Colonel Robert S. Adden (Class of 1944)
Colonel Robert S. Adden, class of ’44 or “the class that never was,” left The Citadel after his junior year to serve in World War II. After being seriously wounded in Europe,
he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” and the Purple Heart. Colonel Adden completed his Bachelor’s degree as the first honor graduate of The Citadel. He began his teaching career at The Citadel in 1947. After receiving his MBA and Ph.D., Colonel Adden returned to teaching at The Citadel and rose to the rank of Colonel and head of the Department of Business Administration, launching the MBA and evening undergraduate programs. Colonel Adden has also been described as “the most loyal fan of Citadel Athletics” and “the mainstay” of the class of 1944. He is a life member of the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army, a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, and a former Treasurer of The Citadel Development Foundation.
2010 – Jack R. Krapf (Class of 1982)
Jack Krapf is a 1982 graduate of The Citadel where he studied accounting and finance and received his Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) at The Wharton School/The University of Pennsylvania. Jack received the Citadel School of Business Administration (CSBA) Award as Alumnus of the Year for 2010 and is an active member of the CSBA’s advisory board. Jack has more than 25 years experience in the financial services industry; and he practiced public accounting before entering the investment industry. Jack has been with Merrill Lynch since August 2008. He is responsible for client development, design of investment policies, asset allocation, investment manager selection, reporting and on-going analytical evaluation of investment managers. He also handles qualified retirement plan consulting work, including that which is related to plan documents and design, asset allocation, and working with third party vendors who help provide qualified plan platforms. Jack’s responsibilities also include understanding macro-economic and geo-political issues as it relates to financial markets, as well as managing a Wealth Management Team at Merrill lynch. The Krapf, Group of Merrill Lynch, consults and advises Corporations, Foundations, Athletes, and High net worth families around the country. Services and expertise provided to these clients vary from, management of assets, financial and estate planning, lending, property and casualty risk analyses. Jack currently is featured as a guest lecturer at Several Universities speaking to Undergraduate and Graduate level classes regarding, economics, finance, accounting and their relationships to the financial markets. Jack believes in giving time to his community and to various business organizations. He serves or has served on many boards including The Mayor’s Commission for a New Macon, The Mayor’s Advisory Commission, Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Middle Georgia Children’s Museum, Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Macon, Youth Leadership Middle Georgia, Mayor’s Workforce Development Council, Sha’arey Israel Synagogue, Federation of Middle Georgia Jewish Charities, Macon Volunteer Clinic, and the ALS Association of Georgia. Jack has been President of Leadership Macon and B’nai B’rith Men. He serves and has served on the Wachovia Securities Investment Consulting Advisory Board. Jack served as a trustee of the City of Macon, Georgia’s general employee pension fund for five years. He has also been selected as a member of Who’s Who International Business, Who’s Who Southeastern Business, The Contemporary Who’s Who, America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals, and was selected as one of 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals Of The 21st Century by Cambridge University. Jack was also featured in the book “The Trust Equation” by Steven Drozdeck and Lyn Fisher, providing his investment and business philosophies. Jack has been married to the former Gail Kruger of Macon, Georgia since 7-15-84. They have three children: David Elise and Allison.
2009 – William R. Klich (Class of 1966)
Bill Klich graduated from The Citadel in 1966 and received his MBA from Georgia State University in 1972. Bill graduated from the Colgate Darden Graduate Business School Executive Program, University of Virginia in 1979. He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1966–1970. After the Air Force, Bill joined the First National Bank of Atlanta, now Wachovia Bank, completed their corporate training program and was subsequently a National Banking Officer. In 1972, he joined Southeast Bank, N.A. Miami, where he held various lending and management positions, including Head of the Metropolitan Corporate Banking Division and Regional Senior Lending Officer. He was the Central Florida Regional President, based in Tampa from 1983 to 1990. In 1990, after 18 years at Southeast Bank, he joined Coast Bank as President and Chief Executive Officer, serving in that capacity until Coast Bank was acquired by SunTrust in 1993. Bill served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer for SunTrust Bank, Gulf Coast from March 1996 until March 15, 2000. He joined Republic Bank as President and Chief Executive Officer on March 15, 2000. Bill was elected Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank in May 2002 and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Republic Bancshares; he served as a Director on both Boards. Bill joined BB&T in 2004 as the Gulf Coast Regional President and Florida Group/State President through the Republic Bancshares merger with BB&T and retired from the bank in 2010. Bill has served on numerous not-for-profit organizations, community and industry boards over the years including the Boards of the United Way of Greater Tampa, the United Way of Sarasota, the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce the United Way of Pinellas County, the Board of Trustees, The Florida House, Washington, D.C. and as Chairman of The Florida Bankers Association. Bill retired after a 40 year banking career on June 30, 2010. Bill and his wife, Lyle, have two daughters, Caroline and Wendy.
2008 - Lieutenant General John W. Rosa (Class of 1973)
The 19th President of The Citadel, Lieutenant General John W. Rosa, United States Air Force (Retired), Class of ‘73. He returned to his alma mater in 2006 after serving as the superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy. An alumnus, a highly decorated pilot, a three-star general and parent of a graduate, General Rosa brings extensive experience in leadership, educational administration and public service to his alma mater. Under General Rosa’s leadership The Citadel has remained focused on the college’s vision – excellence in the education and development of principled leaders – and in this year’s U.S. News and World Report the college achieved a number one ranking among our peer institutions in the South.
2007 – O. Perry Earle, III (Class of 1965)
Mr. O. Perry Earle, III graduated from The Citadel in 1965 with a degree in Business Administration. Mr. Earle was the recipient of the John O. Wilson Ring, presented to the member of the senior class voted by classmates as the finest, purest and most courteous member of the class. Upon graduation Mr. Earle went to The Darden School at The University of Virginia where he received his MBA in 1967. After serving two years on active duty as a Lieutenant in the US Army, he returned to Greenville, SC and began a dual career as a banker and a rancher. His banking career of 30 years in Greenville, primarily with local banks, culminated in his becoming the founder, CEO, and Board Chairman of Greenville National Bank which, in 1998, was sold to Regions Bank. Mr. Earle served as Chairman of several organizations, including The United Way of Greenville County, the Greenville Kiwanis Club, The Cleveland Street YMCA Board, the YMCA Endowment Corporation, Meals on Wheels, the Greenville Hospital Foundation and the Association of Independent Banks of SC. He also served as a director in various other organizations including The Symmes Foundation, Burgiss Charities and The Citadel Foundation. He is a lifetime member of Christ Church. He and his wife have three daughters and one son. He enjoys life on his ranch near Fountain Inn, SC.
2006- Larry McKay, Jr. (Class of 1958)
Larry McKay, Jr. graduated from The Citadel in 1958 with a BS degree in Commerce from the Business Department. At The Citadel, he was elected President of the class of 1958, received the Upillson ring, the Wall St. Journal Award, was president of the Round Table, a member of the Junior Sword Drill and served as manager of the basketball team. Upon graduating Mr. McKay earned a master’s degree from Duke University en route to a teaching assignment in the Department of Social Sciences, USMA, West Point. He spent twenty years on active duty including tours in Vietnam as an aviation officer 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and later as Commanding Officer, F Battery, 79th Aerial Field
Artillery, 3rd Brigade, 1st Calvary Division. Mr. McKay’s military decorations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star. In 1978 Mr. McKay returned to Charleston to become the Headmaster at East Cooper School. He served as Vice President and officer at the Seabrook Island Company and at Wild Dunes Associates. He was founding President of the Wild Dunes Telecommunication Company. Mr. McKay has served on numerous boards and is a founding partner in Horizon Capital Group, LLC. Mr. McKay taught at The Citadel in the school of business. His community support includes service with the Trident United Way Board, Junior Achievement Board, Youth Services Charleston Board, Christ Our King Parish Council, Chairman of Golf Committees for the Kidney Foundation, Rice Planters and the USCA Senior Amateur at Wild Dunes. He was also President of the East Cooper Meals on Wheels Board.
2005 - Charles T. Cole, Jr. (Class of 1968)
Charlie Cole graduated from The Citadel in 1968 with a BS degree in Business Administration. He later received certifications as LSU Banking School of the South and at UNC Executive Program. Cole spent two years as an active duty soldier in the US Army, remained in the US Army Reserves for 23 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He spent thirty-six years in banking with South Carolina National Bank and Wachovia. Mr. Cole has served on various boards such as Corporate Development, The Citadel Foundation, Board Trustee of SC Independent Colleges, Cultural Council Board of Richland and Lexington Counties. Mr. Cole has also served as chair of the Columbia Convention Center Tourism and Sports Authority and was past president of USC Associates. He has also served the Palmetto Richland Hospital Foundation. Club positions include the Columbia Rotary Club, the River Alliance Board, the Atrium Society, USC Business Partnership Foundation, SC Business Alliance Committee and the SC ETV Endowment. Mr. Cole received the distinction of SC Ambassador for Economic Development for 2004 and in 2003 he received the Midlands Ambassador of the Year Award from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Cole and his wife live on Sullivan’s Island and have two children.
