Martha Hurley

Dr. Martha Henderson Hurley is Department Head and an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice. Dr. Hurley is a native of South Carolina and received her undergraduate degree from Furman University. She earned her PhD in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati. Specific areas of research and teaching experience include criminal justice ethics, risk assessment and classification, analysis of performance measures, organizational change, prisoner reentry, special populations and implementation of evidence-based practices in corrections. She is the author of Correctional Administration and Change Management and has published more than 19 academic articles and reviews. Her second book on aging prisoners will be available late in 2013. Dr. Hurley’s research on prison cell desegregation policies was influential in the Johnson v. California U.S. Supreme Court case.

Dr. Hurley’s current work focuses on analyzing international trends in corrections. She currently serves as a member of the South Carolina Department of Corrections Task Force on Juvenile and Adult Offenders and is a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee at Coastal Pre-Release Center in Charleston, SC.
