Cadet companies to be honored for academic, military achievement

Palmetto Battery, Alpha and Golf companies and the Regimental Band and Pipes have earned The Citadel's highest awards recognizing cadet company achievement. The awards will be presented during a military dress parade at 3:45 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, on Summerall Field.

company awardsCompany awards recognize outstanding leadership, academic and military performance during the previous academic year. On Friday, 2011-2012 honors will be presented.

The President's Cup, the highest honor given to a cadet company, will be presented to Palmetto Battery. The company earned the best combined scores in academic achievement, military performance, extracurricular participation and freshman retention during the previous academic year. Cadet Capt. Chris Aultman, company commander, will receive the honor on behalf of Palmetto Battery. The winning company receives the title of Honor Company and will serve as college ambassadors during special functions statewide. The award was established by Gen. Hugh P. Harris, president of The Citadel from 1965 to 1970.

Palmetto Battery has again earned the Gen. Charles P. Summerall Cup for best company-wide grade point average. The company earned the award in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. The award is named for The Citadel's president from 1931-1953 and was donated by the European Citadel Association. It recognizes the company's overall GPA of 3.146 for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Regimental Band and Pipes Company will be honored with the Commandant's Cup for earning the highest points in parade and squad drill performance. The award was established by Lt. Col. William C. Miller, commandant from 1926 to 1931. Company Commander Cadet Maj. Matthew Myers will accept the award on the company's behalf.

Receiving the Milton A. Pearlstine Award for the highest freshman class GPA will be Golf Company, whose fourth class cadets completed their year with an overall 3.0 GPA. Cadet Capt. Austin Gray, company commander, will accept the award, which is given annually by The Citadel Alumni Association and named in honor of a past association president.

The Murray D. Bonnoitt Award will be presented to Alpha Company for the best freshman class retention rate. The award is presented annually in honor of Bonnoitt, Citadel Class of 1962 and past president of The Citadel Alumni Association. Company Executive Officer Cadet Lt. Caleb Alsup will accept the award.
