Corps of Cadets Class of 2011 gears up for commencement

They arrived here in August 2007 in record breaking numbers – the largest freshman class in 30 years. On Saturday, May 7, 2011, the South Carolina Corps of Cadets Class of 2011 will complete its Citadel leadership journey.

More than 400 cadets, veteran cadets and active duty personnel are expected to walk across the stage in McAlister Field House Saturday. Commencement begins at 9 a.m. Admission is by ticket only, however, the college will present a live web cast from www.citadel.edu on Saturday morning.

George Will, a “Washington Post” columnist and regular ABC news commentator and panelist on “This Week with Christiane Amanpour,” will deliver the commencement address. During commencement activities, cadets going into the military will be commissioned and the college will present honorary degrees and several other academic awards. The Long Gray Line graduation parade in honor of the Class of 2011 begins at 3 p.m. Friday on Summerall Field.

Media are invited to attend Saturday’s commencement activities. Reserved parking and special seating is available for the Corps of Cadets commencement exercises. Below is a campus map with directions to the parking area and the commencement media entrance to the field house. Note: The field house media entrance for athletic events will not be open. Reporters and photographers should enter at the rear of the field house. Graduation will conclude at approximately noon.

Citadel seniors Rebecca Edwards of Florence, S.C., and Joseph "JT" Washignton of Mount Pleasant will be among those graduating on Saturday. On Friday, Edwards will receive her Air Force commission and Washington will receive his Navy commission. Edwards is going to be a pilot while Washington was among the nation's top 10 selectees for a competitive surface warfare officer assignment.
