Media Advisory: The Citadel to hold commencements this weekend

Commencement Week activities get under way at The Citadel on Thursday, May 7 and continue through Sunday, May 10, 2009. Among the events planned are the Star of the West drill competition, awards convocation, baccalaureate service, military commissioning ceremonies and the Long Gray Line graduation parade in honor of the Class of 2009.


The South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, in McAlister Field House. Around 450 degrees will be conferred. U.S. Congressman John Spratt will deliver the commencement address. The Corps of Cadets commencement will be web cast beginning at 9:30 a.m. from The Citadel homepage at

At 2 p.m. Sunday, May 10, The Citadel Graduate College will hold its commencement in McAlister Field House. The graduate school expects to confer 267 degrees to graduate students and evening undergraduate students. State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex is the commencement speaker.

Members of the media who plan to cover the commencement ceremonies should be set up in the field house designated media area by 9:15 a.m. Saturday and by 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Directions to press parking.

In addition to the commencements, here are other activities taking place this week that would also make good photo and video opportunities.

Thursday, May 7
11 a.m. - Star of the West. The best drilled cadets on campus compete on Summerall Field
2 p.m. - Awards Convocation, McAlister Field House
5:30 p.m. - Baccalaureate Service, Summerall Chapel
Speaker: Dr. Chester H. "Sonny" Holmes, Jr. '71, pastor at Northwoods Baptist Church, North Charleston.

Friday, May 8
2:15 p.m. - 2010 Summerall Guards performance in honor of the Class of 2009, Summerall Field
3 p.m. - Graduation (Long Gray Line) Parade, Summerall Field
