Budding artists at The Citadel find support

Inaugural Factor Citadel Prize created

In support of the growing visual arts program at The Citadel, local art patrons Elizabeth and Mallory Factor have established the Factor Citadel Prize to be awarded each semester to a promising student in the Art Appreciation classes. The first Factor Citadel Prize recipient is Mallory Colegrove, '12, a criminal justice major from Pasadena, Md.

"We have been very impressed with how the art program at The Citadel is touching the lives of the cadets," said Elizabeth Factor. "We wanted to support young artists at The Citadel who may be exploring their talents and developing their vision in art for the first time."

Nearly 100 students participate in the visual arts classes in which they explore drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography, and printmaking as well as learn about the historical significance of major masterpieces. Students have interned in area galleries and volunteered with local arts organizations and events, as well as become regular participants in the downtown art walks.

"Although it may seem an unusual pursuit at a military college, the visual arts classes have been filled to maximum capacity," said Tiffany Silverman, a School of Humanities and Social Sciences instructor who teaches art appreciation courses. "The Factor Citadel Prize celebrates the importance of visual culture in the education of a well-rounded cadet, and we are so grateful to the Factors for their generosity and partnership."

Elizabeth and Mallory Factor are collectors and patrons of the arts. Mallory Factor is the John C. West Professor of International Politics and American Government at The Citadel. He is a Forbes columnist, the senior editor of money and politics for TheStreet.com, a political commentator and a businessman. He serves on many corporate and not-for-profit boards, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the American Theatre Wing and the TONY Awards Administration Committee.

Elizabeth Factor, an attorney, served on the board of the Drawing Center in New York City and on the Whitney Museum of American Art's Photography Committee. The Factors also support the Factor Prize for Southern Art at the Gibbes Museum.

"I can't even express the gratitude that I have for Elizabeth and Mallory Factor providing this award," said Colegrove "The award they provided will help me go to Scotland where I hope to work on a unique art project."

Colegrove's photograph, "Taking a Bullet," is on view in the Spring Student Exhibition in Capers Hall Lobby through the end of August.
