The Citadel Canteen is back in business

From bowling alley in the 1960s, 70s and 80s to snack bar turned chic dining facility, The Citadel Canteen is back in business.

Faculty and staff are invited to join Lt. Gen. John Rosa, Brig. Gen. Thomas Elzey and David Heidenberg from ARAMARK Dining Services from 2-3 p.m. Monday 10 September for a sneak peek at the completed canteen renovation. There will be brief remarks followed by refreshments. The canteen will open for business starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday 11 September.

"Thanks to our strong partnership with ARAMARK, the campus community has a terrific new dining facility," said Brig. Gen. Thomas Elzey, executive vice president for finance, administration and operations. "We also invite our neighbors in the surrounding community to visit the Canteen for breakfast or lunch. They'll enjoy a great meal at an affordable price."

The canteen (also known as the Munnerlyn Snack Bar) was renovated over three months this summer. Paid for by ARAMARK, the dining facility was gutted and renovated to accommodate improved restaurant equipment, technology and up-to-date food service options.

NEW HOURS: The canteen hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. In addition to the campus community, it is open to the general public.

Visitors can start the day with breakfast, which includes eggs, bacon, sausages, biscuits and grits as well as continental selections including bagels, Danishes, yogurt parfaits and fresh fruit. Lunch from the Cold Bar includes healthy salads, soups and made-to-order sandwiches. Hot Bar favorites include burgers, pizza and a rotating menu of Southern comfort foods such as meat loaf and mashed potatoes or fried chicken and mac and cheese. There are also regular specials and combos.

The Coffee Bar features cappuccino, flavored coffees, hot chocolate and hot tea. And the F'real Blending Bar serves up blended milkshakes, smoothies and frozen coffee.

Here's a look at some of the work that has been done to improve the campus dining experience:
