On a day of wind gusts and cold temperatures on Lake Murray near Columbia, S.C., The Citadel NRTOC team beat eight other crews and only lost to South Carolina. The fourth annual regatta hosted teams from Georgia Tech, University of Illinois, North Carolina State University, University of Florida, Jacksonville (Fla.) University, Auburn University, Old Dominion University and Savannah State University.
NROTC cadets Nathan Fultz, Greg Smith, John Tousignant and Officer Candidates Landon Stultz and Michael Lacey sailed for The Citadel. Cadets and active duty sailors receive sailing instruction while at The Citadel and have the opportunity to earn their skipper B qualification.
After its first appearance at the regatta, The Citadel NROTC plans to host an ROTC regatta this spring at the Short Stay Navy Outdoor Recreation Area in Moncks Corner, said Lt. Ritarsha Furqan, senior naval instructor. A date for the race has not been finalized.
