Lara died of cancer two weeks after visiting The Citadel.Her family has expressed its gratitude for the attention given her, but it was we who gained the most. Her spirit and courage in the face of insurmountable odds are an inspiration to us all.

Each year, the Commandant of Cadets presents The Commandant's Cup to the company earning the highest points for parade and squad drill performance. The Citadel Commandant, Col. Leo Mercado, '79, presents the awardfor 2008-09 to Echo Company. Accepting the honor is cadet captain Robert Miller, Echo Company Commander.

The Citadel Provost, Brigadier General Samuel M. Hines, Jr., awards the General Charles P. Summerall Cup to Palmetto Battery. Receiving the honor is cadet captain Wil Piepenbring, Palmetto Battery Commander. The award is named for The Citadel's President from 1931-53, and is donated by the European Citadel Association. Presented annually to the cadet company with the best academic achievement, Palmetto Battery turned in an overall company grade point average of 3.03 for the 2008-09 academic year.
