To the cadets, "you are entering a complicated, but amazing world...I envy you the things you will see in your lifetimes." German ambassador hails Citadel professor as "extraordinary citizen"

During the May 6 Commencement Awards Convocation a surprise presentation was made to Al Gurganus, director of fellowships. Gurganus, who is retiring this year, was presented with the Federal Republic of Germany Award. The award is given annually by the German ambassador to extraordinary citizens to thank them for ongoing support of the German-American cause, creating mutual understanding and the continued international exchange of thoughts and ideas.

Bulldog Challenge raises $12,152

Gunnery Sgt. Jamie Nicholson, race coordinator, and Cadet Jamie Foss, the 2010 president of the Semper Fidelis Society, presented $12,152 to The Citadel Foundation to start the Capt. Warren A. Frank Leadership Fund. The money raised from this year's Bulldog Challenge endurance race will go into a fund to pay for leadership development opportunities for cadets and active duty military students.

New basketball coach welcomed to Citadel Family

Citadel Athletics Director Larry Leckonby, right of podium,announced Maryland assistant coach Chuck Driesell as The Citadel's new head basketball coach at a press conference on April 27 at McAlister Field House. Driesell becomes the 28th head coach at The Citadel. He is the son of coaching legend "Lefty" Driesell,who is the only person to ever win 100 games at four different Division I schools. He is best known for his time at Maryland, leading the program to the National Invitational Tournament in 1972 and its second-ever ACC Tournament Championship in 1984.

Cadets lend a helping hand to cats and canines

Led by the regimental commander, the Class of 2013 marches down Kind Street on Recognition Day. The symbolic march from The Citadel to Marion Square is intended as a historical reminder to the newest upperclass cadets of those who came before them. Once at Marion Square, site of the original Citadel campus, the Class of 2013 renewed the cadet oath.

Recognition Day for the Class of 2013

The Citadel Class of 2013 completed its knob year on Saturday, embarking on the next phase of their development as principled leaders in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

"Recognition Day does not signify an end of cadet development," said Commandant of Cadets Col. Leo Mercado. "It is a transition point in The Citadel's leadership development program as Fourth Class cadets assume their roles as leaders and mentors for the Class of 2014."

Recognition Day begins early with physical training and classroom instruction on standards and roles, basic skills, ceremonies and leadership in the Fourth Class System. The Gauntlet is the most physically challenging part of the day. It is a rigorous team-building event consisting of a series of timed tasks that cadets must complete. These include the tire flip, wheelbarrow walk, log physical training, group pushups and situps, the firefighter carry and the human tunnel. The circuit station is two minutes of pushups, squats, crunches and flutter kicks.

The events associated with Recognition Day reinforce the concept of teamwork and overcoming adversity through physical challenges and the tenacity to succeed in the face of hardship. The final task before being recognized is a class set of push ups.

Citadel Pipe Band gets gift of new pipes

Photo

Cadet Pipe Major Angela Yenca will be the first cadet to play a new set of bagpipes donated to The Citadel Pipe Band by Jeff Stevenson, Class of 1991. Stevenson was in the band when it attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland for the first time. Also pictured is Roddy MacLellan, a Summerville bagpipe maker who created the donated pipes. Yenca will perform with them when the band returns to Tattoo this summer.

Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the U.S. Central Command and former commanding general of the Multi-National Force in Iraq, issues an oath to Capt. Brian Brennan, Class of 2006, at his promotion ceremony at McDill Air Force Base April 29. Brennan lost both his legs in combat in 2008. While hospitalized, Petraeus—who was at The Citadel April 15 too meet the Corps of Cadets and School of Business—visited Brennan and was present when Brennan awoke from a coma. A plaque remembering Citadel graduates who have died in the war on terror has been erected on the porch of Summerall Chapel where Citadel war dead are honored. To date 15 graduates have died in Iraq or Afghanistan.
