Schiller awarded Palmetto Medal

Harvey W. Schiller, Class of 1960, was presented the 2011 Palmetto Medal during the dress parade on Saturday, March 19, which was Corps Day, marking the 168th birthday of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

Schiller graduated from The Citadel in 1960 with a B.S. in Chemistry. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan and served for 24 years in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of brigadier general. He flew more than 1,200 support missions during the Vietnam War and later taught Chemistry at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He is currently chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Globaloptions Group.

A well-known name in the world of athletics, Schiller has served as chairman and CEO of Yankee/Nets; president of Turner Sports, Inc.; executive director and secretary general of the United States Olympic Committee and commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

Citadel Photographer Russell K. Pace, who took this photo at Saturday parade,was a CASE III Grand Award Finalist in two photography categories, Photo Essay & Series and Photography. Pace’s work was recognized at the CASE III Awards Program banquet Feb. 22 in New Orleans.

Pace, a resident of Summerville, has been at The Citadel for 25 years. He has photographed more than 600 dress parades, and his award winning pictures tell The Citadel story in a way words cannot.

A new commander takes the sword

Cadet Matthew Barry Moser of Camden, S.C., the new commander of the 2012 Summerall Guards, received the Anthony Griffin Sword during the rifle exchange Saturday. The sword is passed down from the current Summerall Guards commander to the new commander each year.

Changing of the Guard

On Saturday, the sixty-one rising seniors who have gone through a rigorous physical training and initiation process officially became the 2012 Summerall Guards. Members of the silent precision drill platoon are chosen for their physical stamina and drill proficiency. Membership is considered a high honor by cadets at the military college.

The most outstanding member

The Summerall Guards' Clubb Award was presented to Cadet Will Walker, Class of 2011, of Waynesville, N.C. The award is presented to the member of the Summerall Guards voted by his peers as its most outstanding member. The award is named for Harold K. Clubb, Class of '68, who died in a plane crash in 1971.

Leadership symposium brings students to Charleston

Bulldog Challenge raises money for leadership fund

The Bulldog Challenge is a fundraiser for The Citadel Semper Fi Society. Proceeds go to the Warren A. Frank Memorial Leadership Fund, in honor of the fallen Marine captain and Citadel Class of 2004 graduate. Frank was killed in Iraq in November 2008 while delivering humanitarian aid. He is one of 15 Citadel graduates to have died in the line of duty since the war on terror began.

Marines finish first

Marines took first place in the 15th annual Citadel Bulldog Challenge March 12. The team of Cadet Cory Moyer, Cadet Greg Nolan and Marine Staff Sgt. Dustin Allen and Marine Sgt. Stephen Maraist finished the race in just over an hour. Their finish time also put The Citadel Marines at the top of ROTC unit category.

A springtime tradition

The Bulldog Challenge has become a springtime tradition in Charleston, where this muddy and rigorous endurance race is held. The annual event is hosted by the college Semper Fidelis Society, which is comprised of cadets in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps unit and active duty members of the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program.

Parade honors cadets for academic and leadership success

Cadets are awarded President's list for exceptional scholarship (3.2 or higher GPR) in addition to their leadership accomplishments in the Corps of Cadets. Gold Stars are awarded to Dean's List students who have made a grade point ratio of 3.7 or higher for the work of a semester.

Cadets mark 150th Civil War anniversary

On Jan. 8, cadets reenacted the firing on the Union supply ship the "Star of the West" in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of The Civil War. The reenactment, which took place on Morris Island, was conducted by some 20 faculty and cadet re-enactors from The Citadel Military Living History Society.

Professor, students raise money for humane society

Assistant Professor of Political Science and Criminal Justice Keith Bell and students from his classes helped raise supplies and money for the Charleston Humane Society for the second year in a row. This year contributions included more than 40 bags of food, as well as dog and cat treats, leashes, toys and supplies. Bell was especially proud of the $366 students raised which will be used for veterinarian medical supplies for the sick and injured animals at the shelter.

A new academic center of excellence is born

On November 10, Tony Johnson, Dean of the School of Education ushered in the newly formed STEM Center of Excellence at The Citadel (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) with an inaugural gathering of nearly 100 regional and national education leaders focused on helping provide strategic direction and focus that STEM Director Carolyn Kelley can use to evolve the Center rapidly to serve students and teachers. This effort was made possible by the partnership of Dean Johnson with Charles Groetsch, Dean of The School of Science and Mathematics and Dennis Fallon, Dean of The School of Engineering.
