Star of the West competition recognizes best-drilled cadet

The Star of the West Competitionis the culmination of many hours of practice in rifle drill. The winner is named the "Best Drilled Cadet" andhas his or her name inscribed on the Star of the West Monument located near the flagpole on Summerall Field. That cadet wears the Star of the West Medal. The ship, Star of the West, was fired upon by Citadel cadets in 1861.

The Brawley Award for Outstanding All-Around Achievement by a Faculty Member in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences was presented Monday to Honors Program Director and Professor Jack Rhodes. The Fourth Class System is no longer in effect

Freshman cadets are overcome with tears of joy and relief and an incredible sense of accomplishment as the words, "The Fourth Class System is no longer in effect" echo over the loud speaker.

Recognition Day is the day that the freshmen are recognized by name rather than by “knob.” Among the privileges they receive are an end to the shorn heads characteristic of knobs and the freedom to walk at a normal pace around campus instead of the knob 120 steps a minute.

Recognition Daybegan just before 6 a.m. with a physical training for the 2,100-member Corps of Cadetswhichwas followed by leadership instruction for the knobs, the physically demanding Gauntlet team challenge course and the recognition ceremony in each of the five cadet battalions.

Semper Fi raises $15,000 for scholarship

Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Siemieniec presents a $15,000 check to Lt. Gen. John Rosa for the Warren A. Frank Memorial Leadership Fund, in honor of the fallen Marine captain and Citadel Class of 2004 graduate. The money was raised at the Semper Fi Society’s annual Bulldog Challenge. Siemieniec was the director of this year’s event.

Commandant of Cadet Col. Leo Mercado, USMC retired, has announced the top cadet leadership for the 2011-2012 academic school year.

This list includes the regimental commander, regimental staff, battalion and company commanders as well as sergeants major and first sergeants. The cadets are rising juniors and seniors and will assume command and leadership responsibility for the South Carolina Corps of Cadets during the May 6 Long Gray Line dress parade.

Pace, has been at The Citadel for 25 years. He has photographed more than 600 dress parades, and his award winning pictures tell The Citadel story in a way words cannot.

Former commander in chief of U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command addresses Corps

Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who completed his military career as the commander in chief of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command and who went on to serve as the cabinet officer in charge of U.S. Drug Policy, gave a Greater Issues address March 24, in McAlister Field House.

McCaffrey, who is president of his own consulting firm based in Arlington, Va., and who serves as a national security and terrorism analyst for NBC News, gave a national security update and discussed current perspectives.

Jordan receives Palmetto

Cadet Lt. Col. Arthur Buist Jordan V was the cadet recipient of the 2011 Palmetto Medal during the dress parade on Saturday, March 19.

Jordan began his Citadel career with a Star of the West Scholarship, the most prestigious scholarship the college offers. A biology major, Jordan has repeatedly earning Gold Stars and placement on the President’s List and Commandant’s List for outstanding academic achievement and leadership.

The Palmetto Medal is the second highest honor bestowed by the college. The first is an honorary degree.
