Class of 2017 Selection: We Were Soldiers Once…And Young by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore, USA, (Ret.) and Joe Galloway
Since 1842, The Citadel has been producing principled leaders. Therefore to begin your study of military leadership and of the timeless leadership concepts and principles that will help you adjust to The Citadel, all incoming freshmen will read the summer reading selection, We Were Soldiers Once…And Young by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore, USA, (Ret.) and Joe Galloway. Lt. Gen. Moore explains that “this story is about time and memories; about our love for each other as brothers in battle; about how we held each other’s lives in our hands; and how we learned to share our fears, our hopes, and our dreams as readily as we shared what little else good came our way…and more importantly, this story also stands as tribute to the hundreds of young men of the 320th, 33rd, and 66th regiments of the People's Army of Vietnam who died by our hand in that place. They, too, fought and died bravely. They were a worth enemy...this is our story and theirs...for we were soldiers once and young."
In addition to the incoming freshman class reading this selection, selected faculty members, ompany academic advisors, and cadet academic officers will also read the book over the summer. This common reading experience will provide an opportunity for discussions about leadership concepts during orientation and throughout the fall semester. Therefore, it is important that you read the book prior to orientation.
