At The Citadel Graduate College commencement exercises Sunday, May 9, 2010, in McAlister Field House, Charleston RiverDogs co-owner Mike Veeck was presented an honorary degree.  The honorary degree is the highest honor the college can bestow.  Veeck was also the commencement speaker.

The honorary degree for Veeck reads:

In the world of sports marketing, Mike Veeck is a creative genius whose memorable promotions have earned him a reputation for fun and success.

A graduate of Loyola College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Mr. Veeck continued a family legacy in professional baseball when he began his career as a sports promoter. His advertising campaigns for the Chicago White Sox and three other major league teams set attendance and participation records. However, it was not until he moved to minor league baseball that he discovered his niche, turning a team called the Miami Miracle into a success.  He later became part owner of six baseball teams including the Charleston RiverDogs.

Baseball America has named him one of the top twenty-five most influential people in baseball over the last quarter century.  A sought-after speaker and advertising expert, Mr. Veeck wrote a book in 2005 called Fun is Good describing his philosophy that the work environment should energize employees and boost customer loyalty.
He has served as a consultant for such organizations as General Mills, NASCAR, and the National Basketball Association.   A member of the South Atlantic League Hall of Fame, he won the 2007 Silver Medal Award from the Advertising Federation of Charleston. In 2008, Mr. Veeck shared his expertise with The Citadel Graduate College, teaching a class called The Art of Selling.

In addition to his work in marketing and baseball, Mr. Veeck is committed to making a difference in the community, raising more than one million dollars for charitable causes. He also asks his employees to contribute one forty-hour week a year to charity.

In recognition of his inspiring leadership, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his philanthropic support of his community, The Citadel Board of Visitors is proud to present Mike Veeck an honorary degree of Doctor of Sports Marketing.

Achieving excellence in the education and development of principled leaders
